Where to find web design inspiration
Publish date: 5/24/2012
So
you are an aspiring web designer and you want to know where to find a starting
point for your projects? Or maybe you are already an experienced designer but
you suffer from the illness of all artists, mainly lack of inspiration? That is
right ladies and gentlemen, designing websites is an art. It is art just like
everything where you create something. If you don't realize it then you are
never going to be someone more than just a simple worker, constantly repeating
the same patterns, unable to improve your game. On the other hand, if you
recognize that fact you are going to be able to create the marvels of the
Internet, but sooner or later you are going to struggle with the plague
bothering all of us artists - lack of inspiration.
Where
to look for it? The first answer would be to visit special web pages that were
created only for the purpose of collecting ideas for web design. There, you
will be able to type in your query, for example "background" or
"site layout", and, if you're in luck, you'll find articles
describing the common problems you are likely to face when creating that
particular part of a website and possible sources of inspiration. I will not
provide you with any links because these sites are quite numerous and I don't
want to promote one of them over another. But I'm sure that you will be able to
find plenty of them using Google search engine.
However,
after reaching a certain level of skill at designing you shouldn't use this
option anymore. It is because many beginning designers are visiting them daily
and they are constantly using the ideas provided there. Therefore, you site is
going to be just like hundred of others which will make it much less
distinguishable. What most artists do, is they just draw inspiration from other
artists. However, notice the difference between taking inspiration and copying.
Taking inspiration is when you see a cool solution for implementing a
navigational bar on a website, you take the underlying idea, modify it, improve
it, and adjust to the needs of your website. Copying is when you open the HTML
source inspection tool, copy the whole code, and paste it on your site. If you
do such things than it is a sign that you should probably do something else in
life.
Being
an art, web design takes many years to master.
And just like the masters of, for example, painting, experts at designing are
taking their inspiration from their surroundings. The idea for a site layout
may be hidden in a way goods are put on shelves in supermarket, and the idea
for the site's color tone may wait in the landscape behind your window. Just
keep your eyes open and surely you will find the best and most original ideas
that are going to make your website positively unique - which is the ultimate
goal of every designer.
